Safari Overview
About Wilpattu National Park
Wilpattu National Park is the largest and one of the oldest national parks in Sri Lanka, located in the northwest coast lowland dry zone.
The park is unique for its numerous "willus" (natural lakes) - natural, sand-rimmed water basins that fill with rainwater, giving the park its name meaning "Land of Lakes".
Wilpattu was closed for 16 years due to security concerns and reopened in 2010, which has helped preserve its pristine wilderness character with less tourism impact than other parks.
The park is renowned for its leopard population and offers excellent opportunities to observe these majestic cats in a more natural, less crowded environment than Yala.
